Towns in Bavaria

Nuremberg is near the top of the Main-Danube Canal. The three locks near the top of the canal have a lift of 80 feet each. I don’t know of any higher locks. Sunday afternoon we visited Regensburg, which is the first town on the Danube River downstream of the canal. After our walking tour, our guide who lives in town directed us to an emergency pharmacy that sold Judy decongestant and cough syrup that worked well. Judy returned to the ship, and I went to the Bavarian museum which had history exhibits. I then went on a loop, stopping in a couple of churches that were open for viewing and returning to the ship a couple of hours later.

On Monday, we visited the town of Passau and took a walking tour and at 12 o’clock heard an organ recital in the large cathedral, which has five separate organs, although only the large organ was played. They were restoring the back half of the church, so the organ was hidden by scaffolding and cloth curtains (to block dust) but the front of the church was baroque decorated-very beautiful and the organ concert was fun to listen to. After lunch, Jake and I hiked up to the castle-fortress that stands above the confluence of the Danube and Inn rivers, and we had a fun time looking at the history exhibits and climbing the lookout tower, and getting some great panoramic shots. We returned to the ship and I went across the street to the Bavarian glass museum located in an old building- four floors with over 500 display cases. I ran out of time to find a teeshirt, so I will have to wash some in the sink because we don’t have a laundry room.

  1. I didn't know about the locks until Russ told me about them. I appreciate the pics to better understand how they look. Very impressive structures.
